The Railway Line
This was the last substantial completely new railway built in Britain.

It was opened in 1885 to break the monopoly of the North Eastern Railway with considerable help from Hull Corporation. Passenger trains ran from Hull Cannon Street to Cudworth on the Midland Railway line to London. From 1905 to 1917 there was a through express service to Sheffield. The railway’s Alexandra Dock also opened in 1885, was the deepest and most modern in Hull. In the West Riding there were branches to Wath, Denaby and a joint line with the Great Central Railway through Doncaster. Closure came gradually from 1932 when the Cudworth to Howden passenger service ended.

Now only the high level line around Hull and a 4 1/2 mile relaid section from Hensall Junction to Drax Power Station are in use.
