Top designer offers tips on a plate
Designer Matthew Rice who once worked with Princess Margaret’s son, Lord Linley, returns to Hull in June to support his late aunt’s charity.
Matthew, now a major designer for Bridgewater Pottery run by his wife, Emma Bridgewater, will give tips on pottery design and invite guests to paint a plate each at an event organised by OSPREY (Osteoporosis Research in East Yorkshire.)
Matthew is the nephew of the late Sheila Chetham who was well known for her unstinting volunteers work for charity . Sheila founded OSPREY to raise funds for the pioneering research into osteoporosis, fragile bone disease, nowadays carried out at Hull’s Centre for Metabolic Bone Disease by a team led by Professor David Purdie and Dr Sheelagh Doherty. Matthew’s mother is Hull-born Pat Albeck, Sheila’s sister, famous for designing National Trust tea-towels. His father, Peter Rice, is internationally renowned as a theatre and opera designer.
The event at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Willerby, on Monday June 9 wifl follow the same format as one held there in 2001 .Matthew will give separate morning and afternoon demonstrations with both groups meeting for lunch. He provides plain plates for guests to try out their artistic skills and takes them for firing at Bridgewater Pottery. They can be collected at the Ramada Jarvis at a later date. Tickets costing £25 include a plate.
OSPREY committee member Mrs Sue Chetbam said, “Matthew is looking forward to coming back to Hull. He was very fond of Sheila and is doing this for her. The last time he came everyone had a fantastic time
and designed some really interesting plats"
OSPREY chairman Mrs Lyn Clarke said, “We are thrilled Matthew is coming back for a second time to demonstrate his marvellous techniques and inspire us all. Our first plate painting event was astoundingly successful and left people clamourrng for more.
