CUTS TO THE ELECTRICITY SUPPLY
The Parish Council has received many complaints from residents about the increased frequency of cuts to the electricity supply that we are experiencing in the parish. These vary from full cuts, sometimes of several hours, to cuts of only a second, but equally annoying as they interfere with the settings of household electrical equipment.
Mark Marshall of Y E D L, the company responsible for the power supply to the village, attended the October Meeting of the Council.
He explained that Skidby was fed by a 40 kilometre long circuit from Cottingham which also served Little Weighton, Raywell and Riplingham. The lines were erected in 1965 and had been partially refurbished 10 years ago. Outside of the villages the supply was on overhead lines, which were nine times more vulnerable to damage than underground cables. There are no plans to provide a wholly underground supply.
The brief cuts in supply could be caused by any interference on the lines and the system was designed to cut out in that event to prevent more serious damage. Longer cuts were usually caused by an area overload or falling tree.
Y E D L were aware of intermittent faults on the circuit on conductors, lines and transformers but had insufficient manpower to carry out more than routine inspections of the overhead lines. However a walking inspection was to be carried out in late October following many complaints from users on the circuit.
Residents could help by informing Y E D L of trees encroaching onto overhead lines, lines appearing to be shorting etc. Their free telephone number is 0800 375675.
Discussing the matter further after Mark Marshall had left the Council Meeting, members felt that Skidby and other rural areas were generally receiving an inferior supply whilst paying the same costs for electricity supply as urban areas. It was agreed to write a letter to O F G E M, the regulating body responsible for power supply, asking for their comments.
